Arthog

'Arthog' is an outdoor education centre based in South Snowdonia. Every August the Ludus crew go to Arthog for a team building weekend. In exchange the dance tutors do in service training for the teachers of Shropshire(INSET).

Last year's weekend (2002), featured below also helped to inroduce new recruits Hannah and Louise to the Ludus team. As you can see from the piccies, the weekend was a lot of fun!

Day One

After a very long drive and various members of the Ludus team experiencing different levels of carsickness, we finally arrived at our destination. After choosing bunk beds, we were sent off on a night walk, which consisted of us walking around a boggy field with pillowcases over our heads. Despite the fact it seemed to take us hours to complete the course, everyone seemed satisfied that the new Ludus team would be a success.

Day Two

Splash! An early start and a bit more travel sickness led us to our first task of the day…a 4-mile canoe trip up the estuary. Cath was the only person to have experienced canoeing before and her last experience had landed her in hospital with some rather nasty scrapes! This did not bode well for our journey and surely enough within about fifteen minutes; Phil had catapulted both himand Andrea into the water. Cath and Louise, despite managing to stay in their boat, failed to make much progress and keep drifting off in the wrong direction. We finally got everyone safely to our finishing point (although some got there earlier than others!)

Later that afternoon, the team were fitted out with wetsuits and attempted a gorge scramble. This proved to be one of the most terrifying experiences so far and involved the team absailing down waterfalls and plunging into freezing cold water.New recruits Hannah and Louise were dubious but Andrea's enthusiasm put them both at ease! We were shocked that we all came out alive and went to celebrate our achievement with a sticky toffee pudding in the local pub.

Day Three

anna climbingAfter a very early start we were set our final challenge, a rock climb. Rachel and Phil, (alias spider man,) had no problems tackling the rock face whereas as others were not so confident. The sheer drop was enough to put Cath, Hannah and Anna off (although we all managed an attempt in the end!) Louise was brave enough to go first, but had a look of regret in her eyes when she realised what she'd let herself in for! All in all it was a success for those members of the team who were brave enough to climb to the top and those members who were brave enough to watch!

By the afternoon, the team was ready to leave Arthog and say goodbye to our instructor, Anthea, who we'd now named as the Ludus Guru. After a few final photos and cups of tea, we set on our way back up north, with thoughts of our Arthog experience still fresh in our minds.
