Working with MENCAP

Following the success of an introductory block of sessions, Lancaster Dance Development Project (LDDP) will continue its dance classes with MENCAP during 2011, the leading UK charity for people with a learning disability and their families.

Improving fitness and well-being

So how did the sessions come about? Ludus Community Dance Artist, Helen Gould, was initially approached by Anne Harrison (Lancaster and Morecambe College) who was concerned that, due to funding changes, adults with learning disabilities would soon be unable to continue accessing dance courses at college. This would leave many of this group stuck at home with very little activity to get involved in.

As such, LDDP offered a taster session that was then followed by a paid block of 10 sessions. The sessions explore creative movement ideas and tasks across a variety of popular dance styles, and also work on improving their fitness and general well-being within a safe and tailored environment.
