Dance Notator

Notation is the method of recording dances on paper using symbols in order to analyse and understand a dance and preserve it for the future. Major dance companies employ notators to record their repertoire and reconstruct and rehearse previously choreographed dances and ballets. There are two existing methods of recording movement; Labanotation and Banesh Notation. The Royal Academy of Dance has a course in Banesh Notation and Labanotation can be studies at the University of Surrey. Laban runs a specialist Diploma in Dance Notating. AS and A Level Dance and dance degree courses include the basics of notation but undertaking a specialist course would be necessary in order to have a career as a notator.
