Dance Development Work Placements
You can find out more about the Dance Development Department (DDD) and the work they carry out in their mini site.
Q. What's so good about work experience at Ludus?
It involves lots of dancing with lots of different groups across Lancashire. Hopefully it is an opportunity to see a small co operative dance company in action. We program your time to ensure you get a variety of experiences so that you can really gain awareness of what our work involves. You can also be instrumental in planning your program. We provide you with meaningful tasks that will be beneficial to both you and the company.
Q. What type of person would be an ideal candidate for work experience in your department?
Anyone who is passionate about community dance, willing to learn and be challenged. You have to be committed to talking part in all experiences and become part of our team. We also accept placements who want to experience the administration side of the company or to help us with our marketing or website.
Q. What would their role be? What would it involve?
Predominately you will be participating in dance sessions for example in primary schools, youth and community centres, toddler sessions, dance for older people and other community dance groups. Basically they would shadow and assist our team in one of those areas. It may involve evening work too and the opportunity to participate in exciting one-off projects depending on the time of year.
The work happens in Lancaster and Morecambe and further afield in Preston, Blackburn and Burnley. As the work happens across the County you will be transported by an artist in their car should this be required.
Q. Do I need any previous experience?
Yes! An interest, passion, or previous experience in dance usually leads people to Ludus. You don't have to be private ballet school trained, maybe you do dance at school or in your spare time. So long as you are motivated and enthusiastic about dance work in the community you can learn a lot from Ludus Dance.
College or University placements are usually directed from their dance course. We do accept applications from drama, physical theatre, expressive and theraputic arts courses.
Q. How should I contact Ludus?
Write a cover letter explaining when you want the placement, and why and specifically what you wish to look at with us; admin, dance teaching, marketing etc.
Q: Do I need to provide any references?
It helps if you can provide at least one reference from a teacher or tutor.
Q. Is there anything else they should know?
We are inundated with requests for placements. Consequently we have to be quite strict on accepting only 1 per department, per term with more in the Summer term to accomodate GCSE requests. It is best to request a placement at least 6 months in advance. We want to provide a quality experience, not just making teas and collecting sandwiches, so it takes time to look after a placement.
